"Great is the mystery of the faith!" The Church professes this mystery in the Apostles' Creed and celebrates it in the sacramental liturgy, so that the life of the faithful may be conformed to Christ in the Holy Spirit to the glory of God the Father. This mystery, then, requires that the faithful believe in it, that they celebrate it, and that they live from it in a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God.

This relationship is prayer.

St. Therese of Lisieux stated, "For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy."  (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2558)

Prayer can be guided by formal passages or it can be spontaneous.  The importance is that it expresses what you truly want to express to God and includes time where you quiet your thoughts and listen to God's response or just be in His presence.

Some look to the Psalms or other sections of the Bible for passages that express their hearts yearnings.  Some find prayer books helpful.  Formal prayers can at times help us gain a better perspective or move through particular emotional states.   They can get us unstuck and in communication with God.
